US rapper Jay-Z’s sound engineer, Young Guru, recently visited South Africa to
launch an annual scholarship fund. Young Guru, real name Gimel Keaton, teamed up
with Cape Town’s School of Audio Engineering (SAE) to come up with the Young Guru
SAE Scholarship.
The scholarship, which is also supported by local organization – Heal The Hood, will
award a student tuition worth R60000 at the Cape Town college. “The recipient of
the Young Guru SAE Scholarship will be announced next year,’ said Trenton Birch
Head of Marketing at SAE. “We plan to invite Young Guru for the announcement.
During his visit, Young Guru also hosted two workshops at the SAE Neve studio and
in Mitchells Plain in conjunction with Heal The Hood. Ready D, Kanyi, Youngsta, Ill
Skillz, Fletcher, Mtr Sakitumi, DJ Hi Teck, SAE students and industry professionals
were in attendance.
“At the workshops Young Guru imparted his technical knowledge and advised the
young people, in attendance, on how to break into the music industry. He also
discussed how he met Jay Z and stated that his role is more than just engineering.
Young Guru e orchestrates and overseas the whole process from mixing to
mastering,’ concluded Birch.
