Guardian News and Media, one of the UK’s successful and innovative media companies hosted influential figures from across Africa and the rest of the world in June. They met in Johannesburg at an event called Guardian Activate to discuss how the open internet is reshaping the world. Activate is the Guardian’s platform for individuals and organisations working across all sectors who are using digital technologies. Audio visual and technical supplier Avstage handled all elements including technical, furnishing, set design and decor, for the event.
The concept for Guardian Activate was described by the client as an exciting multi-disciplinary program of presentations, debates and lightning pitches to look at a number of key themes. Previously held in London, New York, Delhi and Singapore, the one day summit where the movers and shakers of the tech world come together to learn, debate and inspire was held in Johannesburg for the first time.
Very high profile, the event attracts an audience made up of senior level delegates from across Africa and the world – drawing on the private, public and third sectors.
After receiving the brief, Avstage made developed an instant line of communication with Guardian in London. Meetings were held over the phone and Skype and all aspects were discussed and understood before a formal quote was submitted. The client had never seen the venue, so detailed floor plans and 3D renderings were created by Avstage to convey the concept and handled the technical, furnishing, set design and decor.
The AV supplier was tasked with the responsibility of maintaining the strong brand of Guardian Activate. The primary venue was the Glass House where the plenary sessions were filmed and streamed on to the Turbine. Delegates could watch sessions in the exhibition area where some people were holding one-on-one meetings and interacting with exhibitors. The directive was given to create an open lounge to project a live stream, a “live lounge” with soft furnishings and coffee tables.
It was extremely important that the day look slick, professional and techy. Avstage met all the criteria of an exacting client who was thrilled with the result. An event that was delivered without a hitch and with the highest level of professionalism, accuracy and attention to detail.
